If you have ever watched the dance scenes in the movies of Pride and Prejudice or Emma, then you have seen glimpses of English country dancing.  In the 1700s American colonists were dancing the same ones as being danced in England at the time.  The Regency Era corresponds to our Federalist period.  The dances share many similarities with the Scottish country dances.  Some of the dances are lively and many others are slower and elegant.  Most dances are done in longways sets with partner, although it is not necessary to bring a partner as we change partners throughout class so as to include everyone.  Dancers should wear comfortable footwear and clothing.  These dances are enjoyed worldwide!  Dances are taught by a patient and experienced instructor.

A good link with a brief history of English country dancing and a description of the many figures. Another helpful link on figures.

Watch the videos below. They are both "The Hole in the Wall" but the first one is casual and the second one is very practiced and in Regency Era attire.  The third one is a performance of Jameko, also known as "Jamaica."

We also dance Scottish country dances and a few videos can be seen below.
