American History: The Civil War 

American History (9th-12th Grades)
Live online - Date/Time:  Mondays 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm EST

Instructor:  Renee Metcalf

Course Description:  This class is a year-long exploration of American history, concentrating on one of the most significant events that continues to affect Americans today. It offers a balanced and honest examination of the Civil War (also known as the War Between the States), with particular attention to the South's contributions. Students will delve into the causes of the War, key battles, instances of remarkable leadership, and the War's aftermath. Weekly readings and brief writing assignments will be required, and students are encouraged to actively engage in discussions.

Tuition: $90/month or $324/semester

The War Between the States:  America's Uncivil War  by John Dwyer

Goals and Objectives:
  • Understand the differences in culture between the Northern and Southern United States.
  • Learn the causes and similarities between the War for Independence of 1776 and the War for Southern Independence in 1861-1865.
  • Become acquainted with leaders of both the North and the South.
  • Examine the qualities in great leaders.
  • Learn the truth about slavery and not the politically popular view so prevalent today.
  • Identify the causes of the War Between the States.
  • Learn the difference between a "civil war" and a "war between the states."
  • Learn about life before, during, and after the War.
  • Understand the Reconstruction and its effects today.
  • Constitutional Amendments that were added during this time.
  • Understand the vocabulary associated with this historical study.
  • Develop your ability to think critically by participating in discussions.
